congrats to the new grandchild!

don't know if this helps, but i latched my son off, when the MER came
and let some milk flow onto a piece of cloth and latched back on, when
the flow slowed down.
that did the trick for us.

> I am posting for the first time. Please excuse the long explanation.  We have also seen two other lactation consultants to try to help with these problems.  My daughter has a 4 week old baby who has not been able to sustain her latch since birth.  She was term and vigorous. She does not have a tongue tie, confirmed by two consultants.  She does seem to curl her tongue.  We started a shield on day 3 which helped her stay at the breast, in the interim Dad was finger feeding with pumped colostrum/milk.  We changed to a hospital grade pump on day 4 due to low milk supply/engorgement.  We treated the engorgement and the "River" started to flow.  She now seems to have a very aggressive MER and a very abundant supply.  The baby gulps at the breast and if she doesn't get a great burp, of course she than spits, some times quite a lot. She has been gaining weight at hyper speeds, a pound a week, is she going to continue doing this... she was 6#8 ozs and

We have tried at the breast without the shield in different alert and quiet states.  We also tried nursing with my daughter and the baby in the tub which was probably the best she has done because mom and baby were so relaxed.  The baby has such a hard time because the MER is rapid and so forceful.  As you can see, we are all frustrated and just wondering if you can send any suggestions our way.

Because the Medieval Church, with the support of kings, princes and
secular authorities, controlled medical education and practice, the
Inquisition constitutes, among other things, an early instance of the
"professional" repudiating the skills and interfering with the rights
of the "nonprofessional" to minister to the poor. -Thomas Szasz, The
Manufacture of Madness-
