I think the answer to that question would be horrifyingly large...my
experience in Australia has been that it happens quite often. I think Morgan
would echo for the UK. And it is often handled quite badly it seems
(infrequent access, breastpump not supplied, breastmilk not transported,
breastmilk not fed- at the other end of the spectrum the ick factor is at
work with foster carers who refuse to handle expressed breastmilk).

How many babies go into foster care when they are still at bfing age  
(in the
US, I would put that at a few months as far as policy makers and foster
care workers are concerned?) My guess is that not too many babies are
placed in foster care with non-relatives, but I don't know that.
