Honestly, I can't think of a better plan. You get to raise your queens
yourself under your conditions and management and selection process at a
time when conditions are best. Wintering them in AL wouldn't be
difficult. You would probably expand them into singles or two story nuc
boxes. The queens will be in their prime at your main flow and I would
say these overwintered units will out-produce any split with a bought in
queen.
