Hi all,
Following on from correspondence yesterday, I am attaching a draft press
release on the wikileaks situation for consideration by the UNCAC
Coalition. A few comments, given the incredibly sensitive nature of all of
this:
1) I have been following this situation with interest, as I suppose we all
have, but I am traveling and have not had the chance to specifically
fact-check the facts in the release. It would be great if someone could so
this.
2) The PR calls for non-prosecution of wikileaks and staff, as long as
there is not a material change in the nature of the leaks. I felt this
qualification was necessary. For example, should wikileaks drop its
self-described thermonuclear bomb to try to pressure Swedish authorities
to drop the sexual abuse allegations against Assange, that might well
trigger a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice, which is
a very serious matter everywhere.
3) I view this as falling within the scope of what our draft
constitutional document describes as an urgent press release (eg I think
it would be great to get it out by Monday, when the next round in the
sexual abuse charges against Assange will take place). I will be in
meetings and travelling much of this time, so hopefully the Secretariat
can take responsibility for collecting comments and finalising the release
(thanks Gillian :)
Toby
