OK, the scientist is fictional, but I feel I must give due credit to a
character who was co-star of a very popular TV show. Oddly, when
mentioning scientists as portrayed in pop culture, this name rarely
comes up as a positive example.
Yet consider some of the mass media's stereotypes of scientists, and how
they get broken here...
Stereotype: Scientists are men.
Not in this case. (And, a nod to the interdisciplinary science that came
up on the listserv recently, her phD was in medicine, undergrad degree
in physics.)
Stereotype: scientists run the gamut from ethically challenged to
outright morally bankrupt.
Not here. This female scientist was very concerned about saving lives
and what was morally right, usually moreso that her partner.
Stereotype: scientists are wimps.
While losing her fair share of fights, this scientist was also capable
of kicking some ass. And was a pretty good shot, too.
Stereotype: the primary goal of scientists = taking over the world.
Contrary to the mad scientist image, this woman was largely fighting to
prevent that very thing.
Stereotype: scientists are cowardly.
Far from cringing in fear, this scientist pioneered the use of the
grisly autopsy as a dramatic device on TV, fought through much personal
tragedy, and faced down a ceaseless horde of horrifying bad guys.
Stereotype: scientists range from comically unattractive to grotesquely
unattractive.
Let's just say that, despite an ultra-conservative wardrobe, this
scientist had more than a few viewers smitten with her.
Stereotype: scientists have no sense of humor.
This scientist? Handy with a good zinger.
So where's the love for FBI Special Agent Dana Katherine Scully of "The
X-Files"?
