Hi Bob,
Some time ago, somebody in the industry made available a long, flat aluminum stick with an angled hook on the end so it would go all the way back to the far end of the bottom board and fit tight in the corners to do that exact thing. It was painted green...don't recall the maker, but we got one and reviewed it in the magazine. I still have mine, and it still works, just like you described. Lots of dead bees on the bottom board in mid-winter is indeed a bad sign...starvation perhaps, or damaged bees expiring before their time...
