Susan has been writing about the use of language and sayings that are
used, and there has also been some written by Fleur and others about
language and dads -- all in relation to breastfeeding. Language is
very important, and this has been written about previously, and will
need to be written about in the future.
We now talk about breastfeeding is normal rather than breastfeeding
is best. We now talk about looking for baby feeding cues and for
frequent feeding according to need rather than watching the clock and
timing feeds.
What is important is that we adapt, modify and learn about using
language that is appropriate for the individual. It is the diversity
of communication that we need to look for and use to advantage. The
language will evolve and change with different groups and different
clients and in different situations.
I will probably adapt some of the recent comments about breastfeeding
and modify the use of my language to meet the needs of the mothers
that I see. Yes, some have eating disorders, some are in same sex
relationships and some just need permission to sit, feed and cuddle
their baby whenever their baby wants to feed or they want to hold
their baby. What is useful to remember is to listen to the mother
and work with her. Adapt your language to meet the needs of this mother.
Kind regards,
Ruth
