I have two words, cow magnets! And they're actually used in cows to keep iron objects out of their intestines. They're rounded on both ends and powerful. As Earl said earlier, the sand will get into nearby exhibits.

Occasionally, it whines up in the eyes. I've had amazing experiences removing sand from eyes loaded with magnetic sand. It doesn't happen frequently, but when it does cow magnets remove the iron particles like magic.
