at our local club gathering last evening the
presentation was given by a beekeeper from France
nearly ALL of the nation's colonies are managed by
small scale beekeepers the majority manage 10 colonies
or less and upwards to 70. Just 2% of the some
87,000 beekeepers are 'commercial' moving colonies.
Over winter mortality was said to average 30% though
unlike Canada queen failure is blamed. CCD is present
throughout.
Also of note; the estimate of managed colonies in
France (which is comparable in size to California) is l,340,000
