we use oil and colored water in laminated plastic packets as part of our exhibition Shadow Play.  if you utube shadowplay ny hall of science  you will see several videos of this.  Scary part is I remember the Joshua Light Show at the Fillmore East.  http://www.joshualightshow.com/
