I am very grateful that we have efficient breastpumps to use as tools when 
necessary.  When it is part of a solution, the mother needs to know how to 
use it for her specific situation.

However, the most common attitude among the mothers I see (sometimes only 
hours after birth) is :'Oh well, I'll just pump and give by bottle'.  It's 
rarely an issue of modesty or finding breastfeeding weird.  When explained 
that it is of course an option, but have they thought of the extra work 
involved - few have.

In recent years there has been an explosion here in the variety and easy 
availability of breastpumps that I feel has had a negative impact on 
breastfeeding.

The pump is seen as an instant solution for most breastfeeding problems. 
So often I see mothers whose milk supplies are dwindling due to not 
understanding how, or how often to pump; not using the correct pump for the 
situation; no follow-up support.
