FLORIDA PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY NETWORK SOUTHWEST REGION

FORT MYERS BEACH, FLORIDA

The Town of Fort Myers Beach invites applications for a public
archaeologist to serve as the Director for the Southwest Regional Center
of the Florida Public Archaeology Network. The Director is responsible
for the administration of the center including staff supervision and
fiscal responsibilities. The Florida Public Archaeology Network was
established in 2004 "... to help stem the rapid deterioration of [the]
state's buried past and to expand public interest in archaeology" (S.
267.145(1), Florida Statutes). The three principal goals of Regional
Centers are to provide public outreach, assistance to local governments,
and assistance to the Division of Historical Resources in the
administration of its archaeological responsibilities. For more

Essential duties and responsibilities of this position include to
develop and implement a public education program for multiple target
groups in southwest Florida archaeology; maintain a regional website
dedicated to increasing public awareness in archaeology; provide
professional assistance to area historical and archaeological sites and
societies in developing exhibits and educational curricula, internship
and volunteer programs, and by providing networks of media and funding
resources; establish relationships with local governments and assist
governments in identifying funding sources to preserve and interpret
archaeological resources; coordinate regional training workshops on best
practices for archaeological site management, grant writing, and exhibit
development; among other duties.

 

A master's degree in anthropology or archaeology is required with
experience and qualifications consistent with eligibility for listing
with the Register of Professional Archaeologists. Applicants must
demonstrate a minimum of two years progressively responsible experience
working with the general public in archaeology or heritage education.
Preferred qualifications include excellent public speaking and
interpersonal skills, public archaeology experience including working
with volunteers, successful supervision and administration of
archaeological projects in Florida or southeastern U.S., and
understanding of legislation regarding archaeological and historical
resources in Florida. This position requires extensive travel in a
five-county area including some weekends and evenings. This position
does not involve fieldwork associated with Section 106 of the National
Historic Preservation Act.
