Here is a research article discussing the affects of sucking habits outside of breastfeeding, including bottles, pacifiers and thumb sucking. An article about the findings was in the Indianapolis Star yesterday (10/25/09). According to the article, the authors of the research wrote "The development of coordinated breathing, chewing, swallowing and speech articulation has been shown to be associated with breast-feeding. It is believed that breast-feeding promotes mobility, strength and posture of the speech organs."
