Today at church (don't worry this isn't religious) the sermon was on
personal growth. The Pastor cited a Bible passage (I fed you as a child with
milk) and then compared it to his own family. He talked about his 6 children
and how they only had milk when they were little. (I'm thinking milk?) He
said "babies don't need any other food but milk". He said "Those of you who
are breastfeeding now know they get all their nutrition from you, they don't
need anything else". He said "For the first six months they shouldn't have
anything else but milk" and then continued about introducing new foods
joking that at first they don't taste so good. His analogy was to personal
and spiritual growth and thinking about the next step which sometimes isn't
easy or doesn't taste so good and not being complacent with just milk when
you are an adult.

I was shocked. Here was someone who was preaching to several thousand people
over 9 different services who referred to breastfeeding as normal, expected,
and good. He didn't mention alternatives or choices. He used breastfeeding
as an analogy for where everyone starts life. It was neat to hear
breastfeeding woven into another context without apology. I think that the
recent LACTNET discussions have made me far more aware of references in
everyday life to baby feeding - usually spotting the ubiquitious bottle in
print ads, or the mention of stumbling around in th dark preparing a 3 am
feeding. It was quite refreshing to have breastfeeding be simply normal.
