I can understand the view that says why clip if there don't seem to be any problems. However, I have also seen cases where it was delayed and later was obviously needed. Unfortunately, by that time, the baby had learned to nurse with the restricted tongue and continued the same way even thugh there was now room to better extend the tongue. Some adapted quickly while others took a lot of "retraining" to learn to use the now freed up tongue.
If all tongue ties required major surgery (general anesthesia etc.) then the "wait and see" approach would unquestionably be appropriate. However, for many it only requires a small snip. I think this is why in some locations it is done automatically without requiring permission signatures etc. (not advocating this, but responding to the posts that indicated it does occur in some locations). It is not considered major surgery or maybe not even considered surgery. A number of procedures may be done propohylactically (sp?) without waiting for a problem to occur simply because if it does occur, dealing with it can becomplicated. I tend to think frenectomy fals into the same criteria.
