I think this is interesting for those of us who teach to Early Childhood
audiences.  So many models and diagrams use the red and blue models that are
really more metaphoric than they are scientifically accurate.  Yet, kids of
that age are very concrete and extremely visual.  What colors do you see is
a common question to ask them--of the 8 crayon selection.  There isn't
always a recognized difference between "dark red" and "bright red."  We
often talk about blood as being a red liquid, but kids astutely ask "why is
it blue there?"  Good question, kids.

I also like Ian's point.  What color is the sea?  Ask a kid.  Is he wrong to
say that water is blue?  I think it ultimately begs the question of why we
are asking what we are asking.  Is there learning there, or is it a time
filler question?  Color identification is a way to let all kids participate
on a basic level, but are heart and blood diagrams the plum pudding models
of biology?
