There's a lovely phrase from a paper in reference to the tug-of-war between biology and brain:  

"the tension between predisposition and self-control".

When biology predisposes us in a certain direction, *some* humans (maybe even many or most) will be able to overcome it.  But never, never all.  Put a mother through a terrible birth, prevent normal bonding, stress her financially, then offer her an "out", and she would say she *is* using her brain if she accepts the offer, when what she's really listening to is biology.
