I have no evidence for what to wear, just some practical thoughts.

At one very busy hospital I worked we wore business casual with lab
coats. This let everyone know we were something other than the RNs
caring for the patient. This was a benefit because while I was more
than willing to assist with any nursing task as needed (I am also an
LDRP RN), it really takes away from the time I have available to work
with nursing moms. The doctors respected that we were something
different and would not look to us when they needed a nurse for other
care. On a busy unit where the docs did not really know who did what,
this was a bonus

I am currently a manager of a level 1 LDRP. We have our LCs wear what
the nurses wear. The rational for this is that the parents are taught,
for security reasons, that all the Birthing Inn staff wear a special
uniform. They are taught to question anyone who enters their room
wearing something other than the uniform. We are a small enough unit
that the doctors know who the LCs are and tend not to tap them for
rounds and such.
