Hello Alissa,
At The Tech Museum, we created an RFID system where visitors could capture
snapshots of their visit, in the form of photos, fact cards, etc... that
they could view online. They served as a great way to tie the exhibition and
museum together. But earning external "stuff" can also detract from the
actual learning goals of the activity, as in "I scored 5 points, but have no
idea what this exhibit is about."
For RFID, there are now several cheap development kits available, although I
can't say how effective they are compared to commercial units.
http://tinyurl.com/6qlwms. Could be a good way to keep score.
Also, consider what visitors do with their earned points--maybe something
that ties back into the main message (and leaves behind their barcode/RFID).
Good luck,
-Eric

We are in the process of designing an exhibit that consists of a series of
stations throughout the building. At each station, they kids play a
game/activity. The stations don't build on each other, so you don't need to
do them in order, although you do score points at each station.
Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Have you found that
visitors get it? Do they try to do all the stations, or just do the one or
two they come across? What's your experience with activities that earn
points? What's the best (or worst) example you've seen of this overall
design?
Any other comments/observations will be welcome.
