I'm guessing they are using a standard dictionary, such as
Merriam-Webster, that has breast-feed; the AMA style guide also
dictates the hyphen. A PR department probably uses the AP style guide
though, and that one doesn't say one way or the other. At any rate,
the PR people believe they are on very firm ground.
However, if they've acquiesced on breastfeeding, then I don't
understand why breastfed wouldn't follow. What is their rationale on
breastfeeding being okay, but breastfed being verboten?
I'll ask on my copyediting list (or copy-editing list . . . the war
on hyphens is not confined to the field of lactation!).
