cience and politics are interesting bedfellows...but necessary ones!
Currently, I think there are four congresspeople with PhDs in the sciences:

Jerry McNerney (CA, PhD in mathematics)
and those in the "physics caucus":
Rep. Vern Ehlers (MI, PhD in physics)
Rep. Rush Holt (NJ, PhD in physics)
Rep. Bill Foster (IL, PhD in physics)

Rep. Nancy Boyda (KS) double majored in chemistry and education as an
undergrad--and worked as a chemist at the EPA and in management for some
pharm companies.

Also, during the campaign, the folks at www.sciencedebate2008.com asked
the two candidates their position on14 science issues. You can read
thier responses on the webiste. Hopefully, the president elect will stay
true to his responses!

If you are interested in 'lobbying' for better science and science
education policy, check out the legislative affairs office of
professional science organizations. As a former grassroots
advocate/science policy wonk for physics, I can assure you that the
organization would welcome your interest, and likely facilitate contact
between you and your representative/senator!
