Here is more information on tree fossils, including the irrelevance of the
Spirit Lake comparison. The biggest issue is a confounding of the rate of
deposition of a sedimentary formation (consisting of numerous beds) and the
rate of deposition of a single bed, which may be very rapid or very slow,
depending on the sedimentary environment.

For a creationist view see http://www.apologeticspress.org/articles/184 This
article is full of pseudo-citations (nearly self-referential links to other
creationist writers), and also follows the usual creationist practice of
posing questions ("How could this be?" or "How could this not be?") This
sort of questioning can appear genuine to novice audiences, but is a
non-scientific approach as there is never an independent hypothesis advanced
by the authors to explain the evidence.
