Hello All,

We are currently analyzing the remains of what may have been an early nineteenth-century open-air nursery designed by Jefferson to grow ornamental plants at his Poplar Forest retreat. I am searching for good references related to the remains of similar areas. Specifically, I am interested in archaeological information related to the aspect and location of nursery areas as well as associated features, such as enriched soils, planting stains, stone drains, and cold frames.

Information from relevant excavations is welcome; especially (but by no means limited to) those related to early nineteenth-century sites. E-mail me off-list and I will post a bibliographic summary on histarch for all to use.

Thanks so much,

Eric Proebsting
