Hello,

This is my once-every-three-year query to the list as an enthusiastic lurker and non-professional.

I recently unearthed and reassembled what appears to be an 18th century stoneware jug in my yard in Southold, New York, one of the first, if not THE first English colony in NY.

Other things to come out of the feature have included an intact late 17th century latten metal trifid spoon and lots of English pottery and a few pieces of Westerwald and delft among pipe fragments, green bottle glass, etc. From what I could date of the group things seem to fall within the first quarter of the 18th century.

What is unusual (to me) is that this piece is unglazed on the inside, has a VERY thin bottom and appears to have little if any salt glazing on the outside. Given the overall dullness of the exterior, the Cobalt decorations encircling the upper shoulder of the pot as well as around the neck and the points of handle attachment really stand out (as vivid and with a gloss) in stark contrast to the rest of the body.

I have emailed pictures to a couple of the usual suspects, but have either hit a dead end or not gotten a reply.

If you would like to take a shot at looking at this piece, please write me and I will send the pics off-list.

I am especially curious to know if anyone has unearthed a similar example

Thanks,
ChrisP
