Contracts and Compliance: CRM Contributions to Histories of the Southeast U.S.

This session incorporates diverse views of the many
roles of cultural resource management in the southeastern U.S.and highlights the contributions of contract
and compliance projects to significant research topics in the region. The
parameters of research for contract archaeology and historic documentation vary
considerably from academic pursuits, and the value of data collected during
contract projects is often undervalued and underutilized. Yet, contract and
compliance projects are now responsible for having identified and investigated
an overwhelming number of archaeological sites and historic properties throughout
the U.S. and in western Europe.

Papers for this broadly defined
session may address specific case studies, thematic research topics in
southeastern history, challenges to modern contract undertakings, complexities
in balancing legislative compliance and client demands with responsible research
agendas, or ethical considerations and ramifications involved in contract
ventures. Papers from both the public and private spheres are welcome, and
papers addressing the 2010 conference’s “Coastal Connections” theme are
especially encouraged.

If you would like to
participate in this session, please send an abstract (150 words maximum) no
later than 8 July 2009 to:
