Not sure if this is the study you're referring to, but these papers discuss
the protective effects of bilirubin. they're a bit technical, but the last
paragraph or so of the discussion has a good summary.

Also, for anyone looking for info to show to doctors, there is some
discussion on the use of supplements for jaundice in the Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine's protocol on supplementation:
