A context for work camps recently prepared for the California Department of
Transportation is available online in draft form (see below). While it is
geared primarily at structured work camps, it does tangentially address
"hobo jungles" (another good search term) and Hoovervilles.

In Minnesota, we recently completed a Phase I and II archaeological study of
a Depression-era hobo jungle located along a railroad corridor in the
western part of the state.

Subject: Hoovervilles and Shantytowns
Hello HISTARCH,
I am trying to compile a comparative study for a research design about
an early 20th century hooverville (or shantytown). But I am having a
hard time finding information on similar excavations or sites. Perhaps
I am just searching with the wrong keywords? ("Hooverville
Archaeology" gets me nowhere.) Does anyone have any suggestions for
references or sites, or even just search terms? The site is in the
Pacific Northwest, but I'll take any sites from around the country for
comparison.
Thank you in advance for any assistance, it is very much appreciated!
