Hi Bruce!

What about a GIANT chain reaction?! Lots of materials to make a rube-
goldbergian device, perhaps, that cuts the rope, sets off a diet coke/
mentos fountain, or ends with a bang. You can give members of your
audience a set space (maybe 3'x3'?) and access to raw materials to
construct a mechanism to take an input from someone else's
contraption and send an output to another's. Lots of slow-moving
motors, marbles, balls, dominoes, and other kinetic things that can
they can build with. They can be as whimsical as they like! You
can market ahead-of-time for the available spaces, you can make
available to key stakeholders, or just have people sign up in the
morning. It'll take time to build, so folks should be prepared for
30-minutes up to 2 hours to build.... At the appropriate time, set
the devices, and let 'em rrrriiiiippppp.

If you have artists, engineers, or other folks in town who are
willing, perhaps they can get a space to construct perhaps a more
elaborate mechanism, or whatever the final showpiece is?

Good luck! Take photos/video and share? Would be cool to see what
you come up with....

Best from the Bay-

Sam
