Dear Friends:
Yesterday there was a huge meeting of healthcare professionals at the
College of Physicians where the keynote speaker was the United States Acting
Surgeon General, Rear Admiral Steven K. Galson, M.D., M.P.H. The topic of his
speech, as well as of the entire 2 hour presentation was childhood overweight and
obesity, an epidemic in the US.
He was followed by Dr. Donald Schwarz, the Commissioner of Health for
Philadelphia. Dr. Schwarz began his speech by saying that breastfeeding was the
first step in prevention of overweight and obesity.
I was surprised, and jumped in my seat!!
Then, the Secretary of Health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Dr
Calvin Johnson, echoed Dr. Schwarz, reiterating the importance of breastfeeding as
part of prevention of overweight and obesity
What is big about this is that here are some of the most prominent
physicians in the US saying (twice...sorry Morgan, I wish they had said it 5 times!!)
that breastfeeding is part of prevention in this epidemic. And the packed
hall (some were even standing) of all heads of various programs and agencies and
organizations heard it. This is a huge step forward.
