We have an infant feeding survey we give
to each mother. The lactation department (there are 6 of us) brings it
to the mother when we make our rounds in the morning. (We also see
bottlefeeding mothers just to document that they don't want to
breastfeed) We ask how they planned to feed prior to birth, are they
breastfeeding exclusivelly now, are the abm feeding exclusivelly now,
or are they mixed feeding. We also ask if they are interested in
participating in this study for a full year. If so, they give us their
email address and phone number. We then contact the mothers at 3
months, 6 months and a year. We have only been doing this since
December of 07, but it seems to be working for us. Our exclusive
breastfeeding rates are awful, somewhere around 29%.
