Hi jaye
This is more of a political/pragmatic answer than perhaps the clinical one
you are looking for. These surgeons do not understand lactation (just coz
their brain surgeons, doesn't mean they know everything, right???). Even if
this mother ceased bf immediately, she would most probably still be
lactating by the time of her surgery. This means that she WILL be at risk
of mastitis whatever she does and a bout of mastitis will affect her ability
to recover from the surgery. The surgical/anaesthetic team have an ethical
and medical responsibility to treat the whole woman. Can you enlist someone
- a doctor (like an ABM member) to talk to the mother's docs and help them
get their heads around why it is important to at least monitor this mother's
breasts through the surgery - and to be ready to have a midwife express her
if necessary?
You've probably already thought of all this ... don't mean to be stating the
obvious
Good luck
