About three or four years ago the hospital in which I work began a
program/philosophy we call Baby First. Basically when the babies are born
they immediately go to Mother's chest and remain there until after the
completion of the first breastfeeding at least. Drying off, Apgar scoring
and required assessments are completed while infant remains on Mother's
chest. Visitors are also limited until after the first breastfeeding.Dad and
sibs not regarded as visitors of course. Our patients and significant others
are also strongly encouraged to do skin to skin on a regular basis and
particularly if baby is sleepy, reluctant to feed, cool, or fussy during the
stay on our M/B unit. Our Baby First Program has made a tremendous
difference in the success our babies have with breastfeeding until
discharge. I cannot prove it to you statistically, but I believe it
overrides some of the negative effects of epidurals.
