Dr. Leeper makes a very good point--the issue of malpractice. As an attorney, I wince every time I see another settlement here in NJ (they are reported weekly) where an OB gets sued for not doing a c-section quickly enough and there is an adverse outcome for the baby. I understand that many hospitals are also restricting doctors for their insurance reasons. (As a natural birth advocate, I am also aware that many doctors would rather schedule csections and discourage natural birth.
I have a new great niece this am, who was born by schedule c-section (niece given choice b/c she has MS, not medically needed, by my sister who had 3 c-sections encouraged her) and who will not get a drop of breastmilk b/c she was told she had to have an immediate interferon shot after the baby was born.
