I've just been accidentally finding out about the Seventh Army Symphony
Orchestra, or 7ASO as it was known, which played concerts all over Europe
between 1952 and 1962. There's a book about it by conductor John Canarina,
who is retiring this spring as director of orchestral studies at Drake
University. What a good idea the 7ASO was, and how far we have fallen
since then, when a lot of music schools teach pop music because "That's
where you'll find the students."
