Our three local hospitals that are under one corporate umbrella have only
8-9% of mothers who do not have epidurals. They don't adjust the percentage
for the number who don't make it to the hospital in time but who wanted
epidurals as soon asa they arrived. As recently as last week, I again had a mother
tell me that the staff told her she'd better hurry up and get hers because if
she didn't the anesthesiologist wouldn't be on any longer. They are often
also told that "You might as well have it now because it's only going to get
worse", and other sorts of terrifying threats. I applaud the mothers who tell
me on intake that they had unmedicated births (many who have them don't
think it is medicine and answer negatively to whether or not they had medications
for their birth--that's not 'educated'). The mothers who have made it
through birth without have not only managed their births, but also been remarkable
in their endurance to refuse the constant barrage of the same question about
whether they want their epidural now--..."better hurry up or it will be too
late". AAAARGH!
I WISH also that I hadn't heard from staff that they are told that it
requires a large number of woman to choose epidural births in order to keep an
anesthesiologist on full time. We have several who do only this at our
hospitals. They don't seem to disliske what they are doing. It's lucrative. I wish
it was like the anesthesiologist described here.
