We are in the process of developing a protocol that includes not giving formula bags to breastfeeding mothers. I have two questions to those of you have already achieved this.
Firstly. What did you replace these formula bags with? Moms will notice that they are not getting a free diaper bag. How did you get around this?
Second. Do any of these hospitals have a NICU? We have been warned that if we 'offend' the formula companies too much they will stop supporting the NICU with breastmilk fortifier, nipples etc for the preemies. This has been costed out and it seems that it adds up to $30,000 per year. I have argued that it is but a drop in the ocean compared to the profit made by one 24 week preemie cared for until discharge but I have been told that since most of our patients are medicaid, our profits are slim. Our hospital will not allow us to lose this money.
It seems that the formula companies have a stranglehold on us that our board will not allow us to break free from. I am frustrated with this beyond belief.
  Any suggestions, learned colleagues?
