An interesting arrival, not yet opened: "Polish Spirit," from EMI.
Nigel Kennedy, aka "Kennedy," is the soloist in violin concertos by Emil
Mlynarski (1870-1935) and Mieczyslaw Karlowicz (1876-1909). Even coming
from a next-door country, I never heard of the former, having a vague
notion of the latter.

But here comes the fun part: the entire Polish Chamber Orchestra -
featured on this CD, under the direction of Jacek Kaspszyk - was unfamiliar
with the Mlynarski, hearing the music for the first time as they were
rehearsing it. New-to-me No. 2: Kennedy has a home in Krakow and he
has been artistic director of the Polish Chamber Orchestra for the past
five years.

All of which is leading up to a question: why is StanisAaw Moniuszko's
"Halka," a really fine opera, unknown in the US? Have there been concert
performances of it anywhere?
