If the mastitis were sterile, no antibiotics would be necessary. Usually 
if there are systemic symptoms (fever, body aches, malise) there is a 
germ present. If antibiotics are started, they should be used properly 
(in high enough doses, carefully spaced doses (for examnple, every 8 
hours rather than 3 random times during the day), for a long enough 
period to avoid putting selective pressure on bacteria to produce 
resistant germs.
