Hey, Penny

As an LLL Leader, I often have SNs & student RDs who visit our group as part of an assignment. My question to them is whether they're there as part of their maternal/child rotation or part of their community service rotation. The information I want them to come away with is different for each. For maternal/child it's more about getting the bfdg info right and for community service it's about what LLL offers to mothers and to HCPs. So think about what your goal is for their visit. ALSO think about how many of them you're sending to the "X" number of Ivy Tech area groups. If a whole bunch of them visit at once, it won't be the LLL experience you're hoping they have because the balance in the discussion group will be too heavily weighted toward students.

As to the getting the bfdg info right, to me the focus---especially with the SNs is getting latch right and how to be sure baby is getting enough. You could readily develop an assignment around that----but if just two of the students went, everyone else could get the information from them and that's probably not what you want.

For something where each student would have their own experience you might consider this: LLL itself has what they call a Listening Exercise for their Leader Applicants to do at a meeting. It involves identifying what each (many) of the moms in attendance probably came with as their purpose that day. What techniques did the Leader use to generate discussion? Then it continues with the observer noticing the flow of discussion: What the mother said, how the Leader understood it and responded, how the other mothers responded, what the different viewpoints presented were. Perhaps you could incorporate a question about whether/how latch & getting enough were covered if any mothers at that particular meeting came with those needs.

Good luck and congrats on continuing with this mission. SNs need instructors like you!

Subject: La Leche League and Students

You were all so very generous shepherding my students these past eight weeks and although I shared I was not continuing in teaching beyond this semester, I have decided to continue one further semester in the clinical portion alone. I am not able to add an "assignment" like Lactnet into this course, but I have manipulated the clinical hours and am requiring they attend a La Leche League meeting. My reason for writing, I need to create some sort of clever assignment for this experience. Any ideas? I could ask generic questions about their experience, but wondered if anyone had any additional suggestions?

  Respectfully and Gratefully,
