Hi Tamara and Eric

I've been doing a bunch of research into blogs and social software from a
marketing/outreach/community building perspective, as part of the WDIL
project.

I'm sure you're looking for something more specific than this, but the
general sense i've gotten (and my personal opinion) is that it is far better
to err on the side of openness than to try to control what your staff is
doing. As shown by the metafilter link Jason sent, clamping down or being
perceived as against free-speech will likely gain the bloggers you wish to
control a much greater audience than they would otherwise have. The best
strategy is to have happy employees blogging about how happy or excited they
are about their work. Nothing will squelch this faster than laying down a
policy they dont like governing what they can do online. Having said this,
you will of course want to be clear about some of the more common sense
things like not presenting yourself as the institution itself, or appearing
to be an official spokesperson. Also, some companies have a positive image
in the blogosphere because their upper management actively blogs. Nothing
beats having more traffic than your detractors.

I remember one of the most highly attended events we had where I used to
work was popular because some of the artists involved wrote about it on
their own blogs, online communities, and social media sites. A growing
number of museums and organizations are setting up official accounts and
profiles on myspace, flickr, and youtube.

I've posted summaries of a lot of the articles i've read about blogging and
social media on WDIL:

hope that helps.

best,
