You might find it interesting to check out the chapter in Piaget's classic "Children's Conceptions of the World" on floaters and sinkers, looking at how children's conceptions of why things float and sink change as they develop.

I'm thinking of a simple buoyancy demo that could usefully employ a 6x6x3" of wood. Pieces that size are typically 5.5x5.5xX*. Also they tend to split if left to dry. Any ideas on a substitute? I want something that sinks reasonably into the water, maybe 1/2 the depth. I'm also looking for a 40-50 quart plastic container that is fairly transparent. I've seen a few in a local h/w store, but they might have a transparency of 50%.

* I want to keep the dimesnions some reasonable fraction of a cubic foot.
