In my area of rural Mississippi USA, unfortunately our bf rates are around
40 percent, with most of these mixed bf + fomula feeders. There are very few
exclusive breastfeeders; but we use a bottle symbol with a line across it
and the words "no bottles." Someone before me invented this, I'm not
planning to change this. As someone else posted, it is a little reminder to
the nurses that there are, occasionally, babies who don't take bottles. I've
discussed other options with chief peds but premie babies who don't
breastfeed effectively all get bottles too. Again, unfortunately, most
premie babies don't feed at breast very effectively prior to their discharge
in just a few days. Reality hurts.
