Stuart, great idea!
The sand could be set against a graphic that shows the paths of travel at
different launch speeds. Next to the sand, add a stream of water to compare
the path of particles with that of a fluid.
As for measuring the speed of a steel ball, mount two light sensors a known
distance apart. Measure the time as the ball blocks one light sensor, then
the other. A common setup for high school physics experiments.
