A good many years ago I attended a concert, held in a school games hall,
in Orkney and found myself sitting in the middle of the front row perhaps
one yard from the soloist, a very young man called Nigel Kennedy. I
am ashamed to say that, while I cannot remember whether he played the
Mendelssohn or the Tchaikowsky (I know it was one or the other), I have
a clear memory of his socks, which were brightly striped and did not
quite match. How easy it is to be distracted by visual trivia! I think
it's best to listen to music with one's eyes closed, or at least with
one's glasses off.

George Marshall Bollington.
Cheshire, UK
