Gaye: You need to know that Flagstaff is just under 8,000' feet above sea
level and that January is the dead of winter in these northern latitudes.
There are likely to be plenty of snow and freezing cold tempratures in the
northern two-thirds of Arizona that time of year. While it's certainly not
impossible to get around then, you might instead want to consider the
southern third of Arizona, the Sonoran Desert country where there are plenty
of prehistoric sites to visit and where January weather is far more visitor
friendly. Through the worldwide web, you can contact such organizations as
the Center for Desert Archaeology (Tucson), the Arizona State Museum
(Tucson), or the Pueblo Grande Museum (Phoenix). Archaeologists in those
places may have some leads for you.

Subject: Arizona - looking for a guide

I am going to Arizona after the SHA conference, having always wanted to look
around the area and see the sights and sites. Are there any local
archaeologists on the list who are free to act as a guide, or who know of
any archaeological students who wouldn't mind earning some extra money to
show a stranger around? I am not keen on driving around a strange area on
the other side of the road, and its no fun exploring on your own.

I will be in Flagstaff between the 16 and 21 January.
