World Premiere of Judith Lang Zaimont Israeli
Rhapsody for Concert Band to Be Performed at
Saint Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota on
March 11 - New Work Sponsored by University's Kaplan Commissioning Project
New York, NY - American composer Judith Lang
Zaimont's Israeli Rhapsody for concert band will
be given its World Premiere performance by the
Saint Mary's University Concert Band, under the
direction of Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, on Sunday,
March 11 - 3 PM at the Page Theatre, located in
the University Performance Center, 700 Terrace
Heights in Winona, Minnesota. The concert band
will also perform works by Franco Cesarini,
Philip Sparke, John Zdechlik, J. Michael Roy,
Travis Cross, and John Philip Sousa.
Of Israeli Rhapsody, Judith Lang Zaimont wrote
that she is 'paying tribute to the complicated,
thoughtful and joyous aspects that come together
and do indeed characterize the people who
flourish in that dramatic land.' The composer
thinks of Israel as a cultural wellspring and the
homeland of her religion. Fragments of well-known
Israeli melodies flow through the complex piece,
which ends clearly as a joyful dance.
The SMU Concert Band commissioned Israeli
Rhapsody through the Helen and Sam Kaplan
Foundation Commissioning Project. Ms. Zaimont is
the fourth composer to participate in the Kaplan
Commission. The Foundation supports performances
and activities led by Jewish artists and scholars
that are designed to increase cultural and
religious understanding at Saint Mary's. Moe

Ms. Zaimont's residency at the school, which
includes visits with Saint Mary's students during
class and concert band rehearsals, as well as a
visit with Winona Senior High School students,
will be from March 7 to 11, and is funded in part
through Meet the Composer's Creative Connections program.

The SMU Concert Band draws its more than 70
members from the Saint Mary's and Winona
communities. The band performs quality music
literature including new publications,
transcriptions and standard concert repertoire.
They have made a commitment to not only
performing the best traditional and contemporary
wind band literature possible, but also to
commission a new work for band every other year
through the Kaplan Commissioning Program. More

Ms. Zaimont is gaining a growing reputation for
her contributions to the wind ensemble
repertoire. Her mid-grades movement "City Rain",
commissioned for American Composer's Forum
BandQuest series, is often performed.
The March 11 performance follows closely the
United States Premiere of the composer's complete
Symphony for Wind Orchestra in Three Scenes on
November 30, 2006 by the University of
Connecticut Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Jeffrey Renshaw.
The three-movement Symphony was commissioned in
1999 to honor the Centennial of the School of
Music of the University of Minnesota, for the
university's Wind Ensemble, Craig Kirchhoff,
conductor. The complete work was given its World
Premiere in April 2006 at Greenwich, England's
Trinity College. The first ('Growler') and third
('Tattoo') movements of the Symphony have
previously received multiple performances in
several U.S. states. The second movement is
titled 'Dreamz (Six Episodes, Dissolved)'. The
