I have a question for you wise ladies -
I recently worked with a mom who described her baby as often fussy and
frequently had
green and frothy stools. The baby was fussy after eating, and it
sounded like an
oversupply and foremilk imbalance. however, once I saw the baby
eating, this did not seem
to be the case, and in fact the mom has a relatively low supply (not
in the range of a
problem, but the baby feeds both sides each feeding, and is gaining on
the slower side).
The mom then let me know she was eating a lot of soy, which she
thought might be the
problem. Turns out her intuition was spot on, and when she cut out
soy, the gassiness and
green stools resolved. She then informed me the baby's father has a
lot of food
allergies, and she did notice a return of the fussiness when she had
pine nuts one time,
which FOB is allergic to.
So - I have a few questions from this. First, what other clues to you
look at when
presented with green stools? Was there something else I should have
asked about?
Second - I was working with a pediatric resident the day we saw this
mom, and he said
that he rarely sees food allergies resolve without a complete
elimination diet once the
baby has developed a sensitivity. However, this baby improved
tremendously with just a
reduction in the offending foods. I have followed many allergy threads
here, and know
that often a complete elimination for several weeks is necessary, but
wonder if it's
common to see so much improvement with just a reduction or
"mostly-elimination" diet.
