I had a similar icky toenail fungus, and my wonderful family practice
doc told me the following - the systemic meds sometimes work,
sometimes don't. They are, however, expensive and hard on your liver.
He recommended an initial trial of what he called the "cowboy cure"
before going to systemic meds. The cowboy cure is as follows: thickly
apply vaseline (petroleum jelly) to the affected toenail at least once
a day, preferably before bed. Twice daily applications (morning and
evening) may speed healing. As the toenail grows out, it will grow
free of fungus, so the "cure" time is the length of time it takes to
grow a new toenail.
OT? Maybe - but - this cure is SAFE FOR BREASTFEEDING!!
Not really what you asked for, but I hope it helps this mom. My
husband thought my toes were disgusting too.
