I would love to see all of us go back to "the old way" with limited visiting hours
but the reality of it is that we will never do that. Contrary to what is best for
mother and baby, the majority of patients seem to WANT all these visitors.

Our visiting hours are over at 8PM but our patients know that they can have
visitors longer if they wish. Otherwise they have the option of saying" oh
sorry....visiting hours are over. I guess you have to leave."

Sometimes, we nurses are stuck being the heavy and kicking people out (if
the patient tells me she wants it). But then again, this is really up to the
patient and her SO. This is just another example of learning to advocate for
one's self.

Open visiting hours came about because of CONSUMER DEMAND, not because
hospitals wanted them.

So, like breastfeeding and everything else related to children, until the birthing
public changes their minds, there will always be open visiting hours.
