ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.
*****************************************************************************

 The Challenger Learning Center in Bangor has successfully moved through the
start-up phase and has a strong board, an impressive facility, and a proven
program in place.  They now need the leadership of a full-time executive
director to help them increase the "missions flown" and raise the overall
visibility of The Center.
The board hopes to attract a leader with strong communications and
interpersonal skills who is ready to take on the management of staff,
volunteers, and the operations of The Center.  They are anticipating a
starting salary of $50,000-$55,000, depending upon previous experience, and
they provide a modest benefits package.

Job Description


POSITION TITLE:                        Executive Director, The Challenger
Learning Center of Maine (The Center)



SUPERVISOR:                        This position reports directly to the
Board of Directors



POSITION SUMMARY:

.         Manage the overall direction of The Center, to include supervision
of the Lead Flight Director, Teacher Education Coordinator, Assistant Flight
Directors and Volunteer Flight Directors.

.         Oversee the day to day operation and set long-term goals, with the
direct input of the Board of Directors, to ensure successful operation of
The Center.

.         Enthusiastically promote and market The Center in schools,
organizations, agencies and businesses throughout Maine.

.         Recruit school and teacher participation in The Center educational
activities

.         Develop, implement, and monitor the annual budget of The Center.

.         Engage volunteers, including the board, in the mission of The
Center and maintain productive and mutually supportive relationships.

.         Provide leadership and direction to the staff, board and
volunteers in developing and executing resource development strategies to
meet budget expectations and strategic goals.



QUALIFICATIONS:

.         Bachelor's degree (or higher) preferred, ideally with a business
and/or education/technology background

.         Demonstrated ability to manage a non-profit organization,
including the initiative to work independently as well as collaboratively

.         Proven skills in supervising, managing, and motivating staff
and/or volunteers.

.         Experience and/or familiarity with fundraising through grant
writing, corporate sponsorships, capital campaigns, and annual solicitation

.         Experience with business development including marketing,
financial accounting and facility operations

.         Effective in interpersonal communications, comfortable with public
speaking, and able to write well

.         Familiarity with the geography and people of Maine

.         Experience with budget development and fiscal management

.         Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and to handle
multiple projects

.         Willingness to work flexible hours and to travel, including
evenings and weekends, when necessary



RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Responsible for the overall direction of The Center, oversees the
day to day operation and sets long-term goals with the direct input of the
Board of Directors to ensure successful operation

a.            Responsible for budget development, monitoring/reporting, and
implementation and for all fiscal and regulatory aspects of The Center.

b.            Responsible for business development to include marketing,
fundraising and grant writing.

c.            Oversees daily operation of The Center to include supervision
of staff and volunteers.

d.            Assists the Lead Flight Director and Teacher Education
Coordinator with the design of outreach activities.

e.   Strives to achieve the educational mission of The Center through the
involvement of the Education Committee, the staff, and volunteers.



2.      Performs goal management and team support duties.

a.            Sets goals and objectives in collaboration with the Board of
Directors.

b.            Presents The Center at meetings and gatherings to create
visibility and generate support

c.            Leads organizational planning and problem-solving.

d.            Supports staff members in reaching their goals and objectives
so The Center may reach its full potential.

e.            Attends meetings and conferences, pursues professional
development opportunities, and takes other measures to ensure that The
Center, its staff and board are current with the best practices and
successful business models.



3.      Supervises facility operations.

a.            Ensures that successful volunteer recruitment, training,
scheduling and supervision is in place to support The Center's ongoing
operation.

b.            Oversees staff and volunteer efforts to prepare facility
manuals and educational materials in support of the mission of The Center.

c.            Supervises The Center staff and is generally responsible for
ensuring that day-to-day operations function smoothly

d.   Understands the duties of the Lead Flight Director and can assume those
duties if necessary.



4.      Maintains a high level of professionalism in carrying out assigned
duties and responsibilities.

a.      Establishes and adjusts daily work to maintain efficient work flow.

b.      Maintains a productive relationship with the board of directors and
with all volunteer committees.

c.      Supports The Center philosophy and adheres to all work rules,
policies, and procedures.

d.      Exhibits willingness to perform whatever duties are necessary in the
development and maintenance of The Center.
